Import, export and back up

Getting maps in is always free. Some ways of getting them out need Pro, and each one is marked below.

  1. In the library, tap the import icon at the top, then Paste an outline.

  2. Paste an indented list. Each level of indentation becomes a level in the map:

    Trip
    Flights
    Outbound
    Return
    Hotels
  3. Tap Import. The new map opens.

The paste box accepts three kinds of outline:

  • Indented text, as above.
  • Markdown lists. - [ ] and - [x] become checkboxes, ticked or not.
  • OPML, from another outliner or mind map app. Checkboxes and notes come across too.

If the outline has several top-level lines, they are placed under a new central topic called Imported outline.

A .smartmind file is a complete copy of one or more maps, pictures included.

  • From Files, a download or an email: tap the file and choose Smart Mind. The app asks whether to import it, and says how many maps and pictures are inside.
  • From inside the app: tap the import icon, then Restore from a backup file, and pick the file.

Imported maps are always added as new maps. If a file contains a map you already have, the app asks what to do:

Choice Result
Import as a copy Keeps both
Open the one I have Adds nothing, and opens your existing map
Replace it with this file Your map is overwritten with the file’s version

One answer covers every matching map in the file.

  1. Open the map and tap ⋮ → Share & export.
  2. Pick a format. Formats that need Pro are marked.
  3. Choose where the file goes in the share sheet: Files, AirDrop, email, or another app.

You can also export a map from the library, without opening it: tap on its card.

  1. Open Settings and tap Back up everything.
  2. Save the .smartmind file somewhere other than this device: Files, a computer, or wherever else you keep backups.

The backup contains every map and every picture. Maps in the Trash are not included. To restore it, open the file as described above. It restores in full on any device, including a free copy of the app. Restoring onto a device that already has some of the maps asks what to do with them, as in the table above, and never overwrites anything unless you choose Replace.
